Has anyone removed the exhaust muffler on the 2.0 jtdm g? I intend to look into removing it and replacing with straight pipes while leaving dpf and cat in place. Every site i found online says it helps reduce backpressure which is beneficial on turbo diesels.

I had a 159 2.4 diesel in yesterday with no pre-cat, no DPF/main cat and no exhaust silencers at all. Sounded mental, in a good way! Not sure if it'd be the same on a 4-pot but its got to be worth trying, after all you'll still have the cat/DPF assembly fitted so I doubt it'll be particularly loud.

I ran my old 156 2.4 JTD with only a small backbox, less than half the size of the original and no cat, sounded great.

So.. This morning I had some spare time and cutting discs and I got creative with my angle grinder ;)

I decided to keep the look from under the car as stock as possible and simply gut the muffler from inside. Tomorrow I will go to an exhaust shop and simply fit some oversized tips.

To my surprise, inside the muffler is almost not muffled at all.. I cut from the top side so that when looking from under the car, the muffler seems intact.

I went for a drive with just a straight pipe and no muffler and the car is still quiet. So apart from some negligible performance gain, everything will sound and feel the same. Having said that, the turbo does seem to spool up a little quicker but it may all be a placebo effect.

What is that third pipe which is vertically going into the muffler ?

Some cars are not effected by rear muffler delete.. I guess G is one of them..

I would prefer a sport two exit rear muffler replacement with the stock one.. This would be more safe .. But on the otherhand when you remove the stock muffler you need to change the straight pipe behind it also, as two exit new muffler should be in the middle of rear ..
