Re: opinions about 156 GTA dyno test

Interesting. Not really an expert but I heard somewhere that the power at the wheels is never as high as manufacturer claim for the power. Might be wrong though?

Re: opinions about 156 GTA dyno test

Looks about right, haven't dynoed a GTA yet but I'm sure the power there is the power at the wheels. Your looking at anything from 20 to 30 bhp more depending on what gear was used. Looking at this it was 4th so should be close to 30bhp dependng on the dyno.

It might the the way they tested it. There are several different types of dyno's to so....

Madeno Racing in Holland tested several GTA's and said most of them exceed the 250hp.

Re: opinions about 156 GTA dyno test

For example, an Honda S2000 has 240bhp ... but only 170-180bhp at the rear wheels due to transmission losses! Although FWD cars have more power efficient drivetrains, 230bhp is great! Estimated loss is around 15% .. so go figure.

What we really need is 4WD

Transmission losses on the Impreza were 99BHP last time it was dyno'd.

Doesn't make sense to me - read a report somewhere which cast doubt on the transmission loss figures. FWD car is ~20BHP and RWD ~30BHP - No way 4WD is 99 !

That gave an on the road figure of 147BHP. Put that against my other halfs (~220BHP at the wheels) 147GTA and you'd expect the Impreza to lose badly. Well it doesn't - it out excelerates the 147. At the flywheel figure for the Impreza was 246BHP i.e. comparable to the 147.

Still can't get my head around it as they measure the at the wheels figure and then measure the braking force on run down and then back calculate the flywheel figure yet it's only the flywheel figure which you could save was believable

Besides if you lost ~100 BHP through the transmission it would generate extreme heat and fail

Cheers

Mark

220bhp at wheels is a lot for a 147 GTA, I had mine Dyno'd on the losses were approx 30%, the more power you have the more your losses will increase in relation to it, but so much affect losses on a rolling road that is not related to your engine output, if your tyre pressure are incorrect this will affect you losses, aligment out the losses will chnage, losses aren't set bhp figure though.

The Impreza wins out easily on a drag because of its superior traction at the start but I often find myself reeling them in afterwards unless they are high powered jap versions or tuned even then I give them a good run

My GTA dynoplot is here
